What Mistakes Do New Ecommerce Store Owners Commonly Make?
Having watched a few of my friends open their online shops over the course of this year, I’ve identified a number of patterns of common mistakes that kept repeating themselves wondering whether other people in the audience have had a similar experience.
Some of the frequent mistakes I came across were
-
Not testing out the checkout process before going live—minor issues with the order process that only emerge when actual paying users start using your shop.
-
Not taking mobile experience into account—developing the whole site with the desktop version in mind, only to discover that you’re getting most of your visitors from mobile devices.
-
Launching with too broad of an offer rather than focusing on the most profitable products.
-
Not planning how to ensure proper loading time—including multiple applications and scripts at the early stage that slow the site before it has any real traffic.
-
Thinking the website is “complete” just after the launch.
All those problems tend to appear due to lack of proper planning and ignorance of some of the technical requirements needed for a successful store opening. Proper planning along with good eCommerce development services could help prevent most of these mistakes and set a stronger foundation for long-term growth.
What’s the biggest mistake you’ve seen or made yourself when starting a new online store? Was it more technical, speed and checkout, or business-side, product focus and pricing?
