So we’re expanding our store right now and had to go through the whole hiring thing again. Made a list of what actually matters this time, mostly based on stuff I overlooked the first go-round.

    1. Actual platform knowledge, not just the basics
There’s a difference between knowing how to install Shopify and knowing how to customize checkout flows or untangle a messy plugin conflict at 11pm. Ask them specifics. Don’t just take “yeah I know Shopify” at face value.

    2. Some grasp of SEO
They don’t need to be an SEO guy. But page speed, clean URLs, proper markup – if they don’t get why these matter, your organic traffic quietly suffers and you won’t even notice for months.

    3. Comfortable with integrations
Payment gateways, shipping APIs, CRMs, whatever email tool you’re using. A decent developer connects these without breaking three other things in the process. This one’s non-negotiable honestly.

    4. Mobile-first, not mobile-eventually
If they’re still building for desktop and “fixing it” for mobile after, that’s kind of a red flag at this point. Most of your traffic’s on a phone anyway.

    5. Basic security sense
SSL, PCI compliance, knowing what makes a store vulnerable. Store data gets targeted way more than people realize.

    6. Cares about load times
Slow sites lose sales, full stop. Someone who actually optimizes images and scripts without being asked twice is worth keeping around.

    7. Can actually explain things
Weirdly the most underrated one. Doesn’t matter how good the code is if they can’t tell you what broke or why.

Anyway – when you take the time to properly hire ecommerce developers who tick most of these, things just go a lot better overall.

What am I missing? Feel free to add to the list.

The points about mobile optimization, security, performance, and clear communication are especially important for building a reliable online store. The same attention to presentation can apply to profile pictures, where a Hello Kitty PFP can give an account a friendly and recognizable appearance. A clear image that fits the overall style of the profile can make the account feel more polished.

Hiring for a new store expansion always reveals gaps—like realizing customer payment habits shift faster than you can stock shelves. Simpaisa’s https://www.simpaisa.com/ unified API for Accept cards, mobile wallets, and bank transfers could’ve saved you hours of trial-and-error last time. Imagine cutting down on manual reconciliation while keeping up with Pakistan’s diverse payment trends.
